| Northern Township is located directly north of the City of Bemidji in northern Minnesota. The township surrounds a large portion of beautiful Lake Bemidji and the 2006 census reported 4,295 people residing in it. A new town hall was built in 1990 at 445 Town Hall Road NW and is available for functions at a nominal rental fee.
The public is invited to enjoy the Northern Township Park located on Algoma Street. A picnic area, playground, volleyball court, basketball court, softball field, regulation horseshoe pits, and two tennis courts are available on a first-come basis.
The Evergreen Cemetery is located on Irvine Ave. northwest of the Northern Town Hall. A recent expansion offers many plots available for purchase.
Northern Township, along with Bemidji Township and the City of Bemidji, have agreed to a unified planning and regulatory process for their entire 72 square mile area. It includes an orderly annexation agreement staged in three phases over 15 years, and the implementation of the Greater Bemidji Area Zoning & Subdivision Ordinance. Township residents are also provided services which include maintenance of 55 miles of roads, fire protection, animal control, a water district, and a sewer district.
The Northern Township Board consists of a five member board, each serving a three-year term, with elections held the second Tuesday of March each year. The Board meets regularly on the 2nd and 4th Mondays of each month at 6:30 p.m. Office hours of the Township Clerk/Administrator are each weekday from 8:00 a.m. - noon and 1:00 - 3:00 p.m., and the Land Use Administrator is in the office on Tuesday and Thursday mornings.
