Private Connection Guide
Private Connection Costs
What You Need to Know
Understanding the financial responsibilities for connecting to the wastewater system is crucial for homeowners. Connecting your home to the new wastewater system is a one‑time expense you arrange and pay directly to a licensed installer. These costs are not part of the Township assessment, and we do not set or control contractor pricing. Below is an overview of typical scenarios to help you plan with confidence.
Typical Range
-
Straightforward gravity connection (≤ 50 ft) – Based on conversations with local installers, typical costs for a basic connection—including crushing and abandoning an existing septic tank—range from $3,000 to $7,000.
-
If a grinder or lift pump is required – Local installers suggest budgeting up to approximately $10,000 to cover the pump, control panel, and associated electrical work. A grinder or lift pump is typically needed when the home sits lower than the sewer main and wastewater must be pushed uphill. That situation is not expected in most cases and will be avoided where feasible through the design of the municipal system.
-
If dewatering is needed – Properties with high groundwater may incur significant additional costs for temporary well points, groundwater pumping, and restoration. Dewatering is required when high groundwater interferes with digging the connection trench and involves temporarily lowering the water table during construction.
Why costs differ: Property layout, soil conditions, depth of the main, landscaping to restore, and contractor schedules all influence final pricing. Get at least two written bids.
These are general estimates provided for planning purposes only; the Township does not set these prices and this should not be interpreted as a quote.
