Northern Township Storm-Debris Cleanup Update

Posted June 24 , 2025

This notice provides an update on yesterday’s storm-debris announcement.

1. Tree-Debris Drop-Off Location

  • The temporary site behind Target (2115 23rd St NW) is now accepting tree debris.
  • The site is expected to remain open at least through this week; hours mirror the County’s extended schedule (7 a.m.–7 p.m., Tuesday–Saturday).

2. Roadside Debris Collection

  • The Township will have crews focus first on the hardest-hit neighborhoods around Lake Bemidji and will work outward from there.
  • Accepted material: vegetative storm debris only—branches, brush, and tree limbs up to 8 feet in length.
  • Not accepted: construction materials, stumps, logs over 8 feet, household waste, or mixed piles. Any pile containing excluded items will be left in place.
  • Placement: stack debris beside the roadway right-of-way, not in the traveled portion of the road, so roads remain clear and safe.
  • A precise timeline for pickup on individual roads is not yet available. Contractor availability remains the limiting factor. This will likely take some time, so your patience is appreciated.

3. Next Board Review

  • The Township Board will reconvene Monday, June 30 at 4 pm to evaluate progress and authorize any additional measures that may be needed.

4. Permitting

  • Storm-related Land Use Permits will be processed as quickly as possible, and all associated fees are waived. Contact Township Administrator for assistance.
  • Routine, non-storm related permits will continue to be processed under normal timelines and fee schedules.

5. Additional Resources

  • We will continue to monitor for new assistance programs and will share any verified resources with residents as they become available.
  • The Township is watching closely for a potential state disaster declaration. Such a declaration could unlock state and federal aid, including possible FEMA involvement. We will provide details as soon as official information is released.
