Winter 2025 Update
I hope this newsletter finds you well. As we move through winter, I wanted to share several important updates on Township projects, seasonal reminders, and ongoing community activity. Thank you, as always, for your continued engagement and support.
Incorporation Update
We want to keep residents informed as the incorporation process continues toward its conclusion. The evidentiary portion of the incorporation trial has now concluded, and the Township is pleased with how the proceedings went. Our legal team was able to present all key elements of the Township’s case, and the evidence was received fully into the record.
We extend our sincere thanks to Judge Jessica Palmer-Denig for her professionalism and attentiveness throughout the trial. We also thank the many residents who attended hearings, testified, or submitted written comments. Your participation and engagement were meaningful and appreciated.
Final briefs have been submitted and the record closed as of December 8. A decision from the court is anticipated in late January or early February. Important trial documents and briefs are posted on the Township website, and we will send a notice to residents as soon as a decision is issued.
Wastewater Project Update
The Northern Township Wastewater Project remains on schedule, with construction anticipated to begin in 2026. The Township continues to pursue additional state and federal funding opportunities in an effort to reduce overall project costs for residents.
Current planning and coordination efforts are focused on preparing the project for bidding in winter or spring of 2026, with construction expected to begin in spring or summer of that year. Updated timelines, background information, and project materials are available at www.northerntownship.com, and additional updates will continue to be shared as milestones are reached.
Mailboxes and Snowplowing
Each winter, mailbox damage occasionally occurs during snowplowing operations. To help reduce the risk of damage, the Township strongly recommends the use of swing-away mailbox supports that meet USPS and MnDOT standards. These supports are designed to flex or move when struck by snow discharge, helping to prevent breakage and allowing for easier repair or replacement if damage does occur.
Detailed installation guidelines, along with the Township’s full mailbox policy, are available on our website for residents who would like more information.
Snow Removal Reminder
Residents are reminded that depositing snow onto public roads or highways is illegal under Minnesota Statute 160.27. Plowing, shoveling, or blowing snow into or across roadways can create hazardous conditions for drivers and maintenance crews, particularly during periods of low visibility or icy conditions.
Property owners and individuals may be held civilly liable for accidents or damages caused by improperly placed snow. Please ensure that all snow remains on your property to help keep Township roads safe throughout the winter season.
Planning and Zoning
Northern Township continues to experience a very active building season, with a number of new homes and businesses currently under construction. Residents are reminded that all permitting is now completed through the Township’s online permitting portal, which allows permits to be applied for, paid for, and issued electronically.
If you have questions or need guidance related to zoning, land use, or building permits, please feel free to contact me directly or visit the Township website. We are here to help ensure your project moves forward smoothly and successfully.
Thank you for your continued support and involvement in Northern Township. Please don’t hesitate to reach out if you have questions about planning, zoning, or any other Township matter.
Sincerely,
Chris Lahn
Northern Township Administrator
